The End of the Empire

"The End of the Empire" is a site-specific project exploring the impossibility of achieving a faithful representation of reality. The title alludes to Jorge Luis Borges’s famous fragment "Del rigor en la ciencia," which recounts the paradox of creating a 1:1 scale map of an empire—a map that perfectly coincides with and covers the territory itself. 

In 1992, Umberto Eco examined the theoretical possibilities of such a map, concluding that any 1:1 map inevitably reproduces the territory inaccurately, thereby sealing the end of the empire as such. 

This act of writing—or overwriting—the world fascinates me and is a constant theme in all my work. In the spaces of the Alte Handelsschule in Leipzig, I painted the three large windows, tracing the outlines of the landscape outside—much like a cartographer.
